Choosing Stair Climbers or Gym Steppers

A firm favourite in most health clubs and gyms, the stair climbers and gym steppers provide a way to get a low impact cardio workout of whatever intensity you want. Coupled with the fact they offer a good calorie burn, you can see why they are so popular commercially, but increasingly as they become affordable, in the home gym environment.

What Are Stair Climbing & Stepper Machines?

Stair stepper, step mill or step climber – this piece of equipment is known by many different names! They have a similar concept to a treadmill; however, rather than a flat surface, steps are rotated instead. Over the last decade, stair-stepper machines have become increasingly popular, allowing you to get the blood pumping from head to toe.

When we think of stair climbers and stepper machines, we usually associate this with StairMaster ™, who debuted the machine in 1984. However, stair climbers and steppers also come in many shapes; whether the machine has pedals or a platform with various steps, they all mimic the movement of climbing stairs.

Benefits Of Stair Stepper Machines

Stair climber equipment has many physical benefits, including helping you improve cardiovascular strength. They allow you to engage various different muscle groups, predominately in your lower body, including your glutes, hamstrings and quads, as well as working your core muscles.

Each time you climb a step, you are balancing on one leg. By doing this for a prolonged period of time and as part of your regular exercise routine, you’re improving your balance and coordination. As your body is forced to rise vertically and resist gravity, stair steppers help to strengthen your bones, encouraging them to adapt throughout the workout.

No matter your ability, whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, you can increase the intensity of your workout with a stair stepper, with the option to walk or run. You could even perform a HIIT workout on a step climber.

A functional movement, stepping comes with a varying degree of resistance that you can control. low impact and high intensity can help to prevent injury whilst giving you the perfect cardio workout.
